CodeRED Emergency Alerts Update
In November, CodeRED, the platform Nevada County and the Town of Truckee have used to send emergency alerts via text, email, and phone call, was the victim of a targeted cyberattack that took the platform down. The Town of Truckee is working with Nevada County, who is currently identifying a new opt-in Alert & Warning platform.
The interruption does not impact 9-1-1 services. Public safety communications networks are intentionally built with redundancies to ensure vital information can be delivered even when one system is experiencing issues. During this outage, several other public safety alerting tools remain fully supported to ensure both residents and visitors receive emergency notifications, including:
- FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) which includes:
- Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)
- Emergency Alert System (EAS) for television and radio
- NOAA Weather Radios
- Public Safety Social Media
- Town and County emergency information websites
- Local media partners, including print, online, and radio
- Genasys Protect for evacuations and shelter-in-place
- Hi-lo evacuation sirens and door-to-door notifications by law enforcement.
The Town of Truckee and Nevada County are working to restore opt-in emergency notifications permanently and will notify the community once a solution has been implemented. Updates can be found at ReadyNevadaCounty.org/EmergencyAlerts.
TahoeAlerts is the New Emergency Notification System Locator
This one-stop resource for the various emergency alert systems is available in different regions, encompassing Placer, El Dorado, Nevada, Douglas, Alpine, and Washoe counties, as well as Truckee, Carson City and South Lake Tahoe.
It can be confusing for people who may have a Truckee address but, in reality, are located in Placer County. By entering a specific location or using the GPS feature in TahoeAlerts, we eliminate any guesswork and ensure residents and visitors are signed up for the correct alert systems. Simply visit http://www.tahoealerts.com, enter your address or location, and let the system do the rest, identifying the emergency notification system that's right for you.
Understanding Evacuations
If an evacuation order is announced, leave immediately following the directions in the order. Do not attempt to take large amounts of personal items. These orders are only announced when there is an imminent threat to life.
